Even with medical intervention and treatment, mortality rates from Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus are still very high. Experts estimate the mortality rates typically range between 25%-50%. And, of dogs that die of GDV, 24% do so within the first 7 days following the surgery.
Â
Factors that have been shown to increase mortality rates are:
- Dogs with clinical signs for more than 6 hours
- Dogs with cardiac arrhythmias prior to surgery
- Dogs who needed a portion of their stomach removed due to lack of blood supply
- Dogs that had their spleen removed.
Â
It is very important to note that survival times are significantly longer and recurrence rates are significantly lower for dogs that have a gastropexy at the time of treatment.
